Carol Korn Bursztyn has written an article called Translating Across Cultures. This article discusses many aspects and offers a great analysis of how different cultures can help you solve problems based around the cultural tenants and values.
Korn Bursztyn relates a story titled “The Magical Orange Seed” about a boy who is subject to abuse by his stepfather. His biological mom is also a victim in male dominance, spouse abuse and is unable to help. The child eventually discovers a magic seed that makes him successful, and eventually his stepfather and son reconcile and their family can live happily ever after. Korn Bursztyn suggests that mother and child were reacting culturally to the circumstances. Korn-Bursztyn suggests to the authors that the way the child and mother reacted to the situation was cultural. It is human nature to fear or be submissive to someone stronger than yourself. The step-father was physically and financially weaker than the child, and the reason he couldn’t rebel against him was because he was less capable of supporting him. Both the father and the mother were submissive, it is clear. However, this response was not cultural but innate. There are all kinds of abuse, and everyone reacts differently to them. Individuals’ reactions to abuse can be influenced by many factors, both internal and external. Macbeth is a great example of how humans can react the same way in certain situations. The Macbeth adaptions show how power, jealousy and greed can be used to make people do terrible things.
Despite being in different languages, the adaptations all demonstrate that humanity is fundamentally the same. While culture has an effect on our actions, it also affects how we behave as humans.
