H.P. Lovecraft’s 1928 novel “Call of Cthulhu”, was published by H.P. These notes tell the story of his grandfather discovering Cthulhu, the great old man, and the cult which worships him. The book’s story revolves around the alien god Cthulhu, with only a few mentions in the notes and a single encounter at the very end.
The story begins when a nephew loses his great uncle George Gamel Angil. His nephew finds artifacts within his belongings. There are two manuscripts and several newspaper clippings in the belongings. It looked like a mix of animals. He found two manuscripts that were of little interest. The second one, however, was about Henry Anthony Wilcox Wilcox. His uncle learned that he had dreams about a mythical creature with wings and a scaly body. Wilcox created sculptures of the visions he had.
His uncle visited him every day and told him that the monster Wilcox called Cthulhu was walking or Lumbarding about. According to his doctor’s diagnosis, Wilcox became ill with high fever. His doctor said that he wasn’t mad. Wilcox did make a recovery, but he had no dreams. His uncle decided to end the visits.
The manuscript’s second half was about a New Orleans policeman, John Raymond Legrasse. Some squatters called Legrasse one evening to report that their wife and their children had disappeared. Legrasse was investigating a report about missing children and women in New Orleans swamps. There had been a voodoo gathering. They discovered the unknown and the missing children, women and men when they arrived at the location. A whitish glow was apparent and batlike creatures flew up from the ground to worship a greenish, 7-8 inch high stone. The monster looked like an octopus head with long narrow wings. Legrasse said it was a voodoo group that was chanting Cthulhu Ryeal. Five were killed and 47 others were arrested after a gunfight. When asked, the prisoners claimed that they worshipped great old monsters and waited to see Cthulhu return. The sculpture was also confirmed by the prisoners. William Channing Webb also made notes about an Eskimos group that practiced the same worshipping practices as the voodoo priests. Although the prisoners insisted that it was a cult, they said that it would continue to exist in the darkest corners of the earth and only be revealed when the great Cthulhu returns. They waited to see him freed. Two prisoners were allowed to hang, and most of them were placed in mental facilities.
A story about a Direlectboat in which only one survivor was published in an Australian newspaper was found by the nephew. Gustav Johansson, the survivor, was about one foot tall when he was found. He claimed that the statue was hidden in the ship’s cabin. Johansson reported that the Alert, a large-armed boat, attacked the ship. Most of the Alert’s members were killed and the Alert had discovered an uncharted area. Johansson reported that the crew fell into a rock chasm while trying to reach the island’s surface.
He had been to Australia with his nephew and saw the Alert statue. It was very similar to the others that had been discovered in Australia.
Johansson died in Norway and the nephew received the manuscript of Johanssons wife. The manuscript describes the uncharted Island as a city of nightmare corpses called Ryeal.
The island was also discovered to be the burial place of the great Cthulhu. Wilcox’s dreams had inspired Wilcox to describe the same landscape and sculpture that he saw on the island. The nephew discovered this too. Johansson describes the day that they discovered the uncharted island. The seamen climbed up on the massive sculpture to open it and the great Cthulhu released. It took the lives of the Seaman.
